Teaching Fractions through Ratio Reasoning Part A (Grades 3-6)
August, 27th, September 10th, & October 1st, 2022
Virtual
Description: Moving from whole numbers to rational numbers is a for many students. Join us to deepen your own understanding of rational numbers and learn research-based and classroom-tested strategies that use ratio reasoning to build a cohesive learning opportunity for all of your students. This three session professional development series raises and addresses these questions:
This professional development series raises and addresses these questions:
- How can I use ratio reasoning to deepen understanding of part/whole “fractions”?
How can I use equal share problems to lay a foundation for grade level “fraction” learning?
What is the multiplicative relationship between numerator and denominator? How does this build a foundation for ratio reasoning?
What are more sensible algorithms for adding or subtracting “fractions”?
Participants will receive a copy of Extending Children’s Mathematics: Fractions and Decimals by Susan Empson and Linda Levi

October 2022
Fostering Ratio and Proportional Reasoning in Grades 6-9
October 8th, 15th, 29th, 2022
Virtual
Description: Middle school math teachers set a foundation that creates opportunities for students’ educational and career choices! Come learn with us as we explore this important mathematical domain together. Proportional reasoning is essential for success in math and science. This PD series approaches the development of proportional reasoning through the following contexts: percent ratio comparisons, rate of change and measurement.
This professional development series raises and addresses these questions:
- ■ What is essential for teachers of mathematics to know about ratios, proportions, and proportional reasoning to be effective in the
- classroom?
■ How can teachers foster the development of proportional reasoning in their students?
■ How do teachers modify/ leverage existing curriculum and resources to meet the needs of their students?
Participants will receive a copy of Lamon’s “Teaching Fractions and Ratios for Understanding, 4th ed.”

Teaching Fractions through Ratio Reasoning Grades 3-6
Jan 21, Feb 4 and Feb. 25 2023
Virtual
Description: Moving from whole number multiplication and division to multiplication and division with rational numbers is a challenge for many students. Join us to deepen your own understanding of rational numbers and learn research-based and classroom-tested strategies that use ratio reasoning to build a cohesive learning opportunity for all of your students from grade 3 through middle school.
This three-session professional development series raises and addresses these questions:
■ How can I more effectively support my students as they transition from multiplying and dividing whole numbers to multiplying and dividing rational
numbers?
■ What are the different types of problems that can be solved by multiplying or dividing rational numbers?
■ Which ratio reasoning tools will help my students see the actions and relationships in the operations?
Participants will receive a copy of Extending Children’s Mathematics: Fractions and Decimals by Susan Empson and Linda Levi
Cost:
$100 per individual ($80 register by December 15th)
$75 per individual for a team of 3 or more
Registration deadline: January 11th
