Visiting scholar Dr. Deepti Ganapathy Presents at IAMCR Madrid

Dr. Deepti Ganapathy has been visiting the Department of Communication from her home university Narsee Monjee School of Management Studies, Bengaluru, India, where she is Assistant Professor of Communication. This past July she presented two papers at the annual International Association for Media and Communication Research (IAMCR) conference in Madrid: “Online health conversations among Indian and Chinese youth” and “Celebrity politics: Image choices of heads of government in Spain and India” as part of the Health Communication and Change and the Political Communication Research section respectively.

Dr. Ganapathy reflected on the different ways this particular conference has supported her scholarly activities.

IAMCR has helped me forge deep connections and collaborate with scholars globally. At my first IAMCR conference in 2016 the Chair moderating my session invited me to collaborate with her and we published our paper in the highly rated “Journalism” journal published by Sage. I was invited as a panelist as part of the #MeToo movement in June 2018 at IAMCR held in University of Oregon. Two scholars I met at IAMCR 2018, eventually became my co-authors for IAMCR 2019.

During her tenure here as a visiting scholar Dr. Ganapathy has enjoyed attending lectures and collaborating with faculty to reinvigorate her research on social media for political communication and governance as it relates to climate change and crisis communication.

My research stay at UCSD has helped me reboot and re-visit my research. I have made the best use of resources during my stay here and have been so creatively stimulated that I have a book contract and many research papers in the pipeline.

In July she returned to her home institution and continues to collaborate with scholars in Spain, New Zealand, Canada, Russia, China, and the United States.
